grizz: hi all dae: hi dotfl: hi wyoming33: hi:) doldridg: hi again grizz: Chat logs and hand records are stored in your computer for later review. grizz: For information on how to retrieve them, go the BIL homepage or email me. grizz: I teach private individual, pair, and small group lessons. If you would like to know more please email me at Grizz@GrizzBridge.com. grizz: And archives of old sessions are available at GrizzBridge.com, on the Lessons and Archives page located at: http://www.grizzbridge.com/Lessons_and_Archives.php grizz: There will be lots of questions. I want to address them all, but in a manner helpful to all, so please ask them in open chat. grizz: As always i encourage participation by all kibs grizz: So jump right in with a comment, question, or bid at any time, but please do it in open chat sretlaw (Lobby): Grizz I am ydannac at daughters house how can I get in for lesson grizz: Since I can't always respond to private chat grizz: We usually do random hands, and all areas of bidding, defense and declarer play are open for comment. grizz: what should E do here? dae: p Shilo_1: 2 C anegada: 2c grizz: all depends on what kind of NT interference they play grizz: if 2!c is natural, then that's a good call grizz: so is the N-S NT system on or off? bbo_iac: on Shilo_1: on anegada: on bbo_iac: I have no idea but we play on over interference dae: off grizz: there is no right or wrong answer to that, it's a matter of partnership agreement Shilo_1: bid 2 H grizz: nearly everybody plays system on over takeout X grizz: and some pairs play system on also over 2!c grizz: those who play system on will bid 2!h grizz: those who don't must either wing it or bid Lebensohl dae: Leb better here grizz: so let's assume that system is off, and try our hand at Lebensohl Shilo_1: 2 nt then grizz: using Leb, any 2-level bid is natural and non forcing grizz: any 3 level bid except cue is natural and forcing grizz: and 2NT relays to 3!c for pass, correction or invitation grizz: and cuebid of the overcalled suit is stayman grizz: direct cuebid, 1NT-2!c-3!c is stayman without a !c stopper dae: would 2 nt slow shows show c stopper? grizz: but cuebid after the 2NT relay shows a stopper grizz: so 1NT-2!c-2NT* (alert)-P grizz: 3!c*-P-oops! we just ran out of room here! grizz: if we bid 4!c as stayman with a stopper, then we have bypassed 3NT grizz: terribly inconvenient grizz: works better with any other suit grizz: but in any case, 3!s here is natural and forcing grizz: 3NT showing doubleton !s and !c stopper grizz: but responder having no interest in NT dae: ? dae: not showing doubleton? grizz: N's duty is to show whether has only 2, or more !ss grizz: 3NT shows doubleton, but it's not the final vote - just an answer to the question grizz: yes, 3NT shows doubleton grizz: so if S has only 5, that is an offer to play in 3NT grizz: 3!s shows 5+!s, is forcing to game, and says nothing else about shape grizz: S has an intereting decision here dae: 4 s grizz: matchpoint gamblers might pass, looking for a top in case it makes the same number of tricks in NT and !s grizz: but imp players will probably pull to 4!s as being the safer game grizz: if you subtract the !SQ from this hand, it is now an invitational hand, not GF grizz: and then responder would use the 2NT relay thusly: grizz: 1NT-2!c-2NT*-P grizz: 3!c*-P-3!s-P-? grizz: now N has a tougher decision grizz: with no entries outside !s, NT is a tough make grizz: and with a flat 15 N might just pass 3!s in that case - again, assuming that S has AKTxxx dee_dee_20: with 5!s and Qless would you bid 2!s over 2!c? grizz: yes, quite right grizz: any 2 level bid is natural and NF grizz: notice something interesting here grizz: when responder's suit ranks higher than the overcall, then responder can distinguish NF from Invitational from GF holdings grizz: 2 bid is NF, direct 3 is GF, and relay is INV grizz: that is not true if responder's suit ranks BELOW the overcall bbo_iac: ok I knew this was going to happen... thanks....I think... grizz: e.g, if the auction goes 1NT-2!s and responder has !hs grizz: in that case, continuing with 2NT*-P-3!c*-P-3!h is either NF or invitational - opener must guess grizz: so in either case a direct 3 bid is natural and forcing grizz: but the relay now is 1. drop-dead or inv., and 2. direct 3 is forcing grizz: everybody clear on that? dee_dee_20: yes Shilo_1: y:) doldridg: y grizz: ok, i will give you guys a break and discuss Rubensohl some other day dee_dee_20: oh noooo anegada: this is all lebensohl responses ? grizz: yes, this is all Lebensohl dae: Q grizz: Q? dae: IF the 2 c bid is conventional, how does Leb work,,,,,,off? grizz: that is a matter of partnership agreement, once again dee_dee_20: my problem is keeping the 2 straight ,,,so I'll stick to standard for now grizz: the simplest way is to bid as if !c was natural dae: ok ty grizz: since you may not know what suit(s) overcaller is really showing grizz: and 3!c will be stayman either with or without a stopper grizz: since we can't make the cuebid after the relay without bypassing 3NT grizz: ok, there is no magic defense to this one - ops take 2!h and a !d grizz: any questions on Leb? grizz: btw, the * symbols above are alerts dae->Club: 2d? dae: 2 d losers? grizz: y, might guess wrong and lose 2!ds dae: oops grizz: but it's all up to declarer, there is no magic lead or signal for defenders to make that happen grizz: hmmmm, what do you think S should do here? dae: p grizz: the hand is not strong enough for 2!h doldridg: 3!H grizz: might like to bid 3!h, but the vul is all wrong - red vs. white dee_dee_20: !s void is good grizz: !s void is nice, but there are a lot of losers here Shilo_1: Pass grizz: and if EW don't have game, they might get a juicy bonus for doubling grizz: so the crafty old pro will pass with this, and hope to back in later, maybe Shilo_1: :) grizz: so, what happens now? anegada: 4 spades eubulides: 3s grizz: depends i guess on what kind of major raises they play dae: 3s Dianne0516: That's weak--hand too strong Shilo_1: 4 game grizz: 4!s is a weak bid, and this hand has great !ss and 2 big controls eubulides: close to slam grizz: if 3!s is a Limit Raise, then i like that bid dee_dee_20: bergen?> anegada: 4sp describes hand and is up to p then grizz: if they play Bergen, then 3!d shows 10-12 and 4+ trumps grizz: Reverse Bergen, 3!c shows that hand grizz: but the hand is not good enough for Jacoby 2NT dee_dee_20: naw I like 12+ grizz: y, and 7 losers - this hand has 9 grizz: so let's assume they play Bergen Dianne0516: At least 10 dp--do you count another spade as 1? grizz: y, i would count 1 for the long !s and another for the !h doubleton grizz: the question now is, what would it mean if N doubled? dee_dee_20: lead directing? guyb2: lead grizz: is that a suit, or just a lead director? dae: lead grizz: probably a lead director grizz: but worth a chat with your regular partner if you have not discussed it grizz: N-S are not likely to be sacrificing red vs white grizz: now E has an interesting decision to make grizz: with a nice 18 hcp and some shape opposite a LR grizz: i like Italian-style cuebids here dee_dee_20: yup grizz: A or K grizz: another lead director X grizz: another cue grizz: interesting also infidel: lead director? what chance of W declaring? should suggest sac grizz: S is almost broke, so N rates to be on lead sometime sthrnldy: i thought u couldnt use cue bids unless trumps was set sthrnldy: oh the bergen set the trump dee_dee_20: trump is set grizz: yes, trumps were set as !s with the Bergen raise sthrnldy: sorry grizz: np :) grizz: but the 4!h cue might be the K, and they might be off 2 aces grizz: 4NT clears it up nicely grizz: unfortunately, it looks like there are a !d and !c to lose grizz: and it doesn't look like there is any squeeze that operates here grizz: interchange the !c 8 and 9 and there are chances grizz: or give W or E the !cT and there are chances grizz: but this is a good slam that just doesn't quite make dae: finesse C? grizz: !c finesse is good for 1 trick, but then then the T or 9 sets up sthrnldy: but playing with less then experts i bet it could be made by playing trumps out and getting discards grizz: possible grizz: the finesse won, but it's only worth 2 trick on this layout dee_dee_20: unlikely:) lol grizz: or maybe 3 on a good day :) grizz: N should cover here, since it promotes the T grizz: any questions on this one? dae: lead small c instead of J? grizz: we did lead the small one first, hoping to catch the T9 doubleton in S grizz: or in N, for that matter dae: sorry ->dae: np :) deniseb: no bergen here lol too weak grizz: some of you may not be familiar with Bergen raises sretlaw: y grizz: with 4+ trumps, the responses are: grizz: 3!d is 10-12 grizz: 3!c is 7-9, maybe a bad 10 grizz: and 3!s is less, 0-6 dae: what is the reason for Bergen raises ? grizz: 2 reasons - the Law of Total Tricks is based on the number of trumps in both hands dae: seems to get the bidding too high? grizz: and the direct 3-level bid is preemptive grizz: if you have a 9 card fit, the LOTT says you are safe at the 3 level dae: y grizz: and that bid deprives ops of the entire 2-level of bidding grizz: so unless 2nd seat takes direct action, ops are either frozen out of the auction, or they enter at their own peril grizz: any questions on this one? grizz: Our time is up then, thanks for coming and I'll see you next week. Dianne0516: Thanks Pete :) NMS04: tu Shilo_1: Great data......thank YOU ~!!! dotfl: thanks pete ->Shilo_1: :) dee_dee_20: thanks Pete cdt: thanks Pete great lesson much appreciated :) anegada: thx pete bbo_iac: thanks so much Pete and thanks all for coming doldridg: Thks Pete norrito1: tks Pete grizz: my pleasure entirely, bye now
