grizz: Hi all, and welcome grizz: Chat logs and hand records are stored in your computer for later review. grizz: For information on how to retrieve them, go the BIL homepage or email me. grizz: I teach private individual, pair, and small group lessons. If you would like to know more please email me at Grizz@GrizzBridge.com. grizz: And archives of old sessions are available at GrizzBridge.com, on the Lessons and Archives page located at: http://www.grizzbridge.com/Lessons_and_Archives.php grizz: There will be lots of questions. I want to address them all, but in a manner helpful to all, so please ask them in open chat. grizz: I encourage participation by all kibs grizz: So jump right in with a comment, question, or bid at any time, but please do it in open chat grizz: ... since I can't always respond to private chat grizz: We usually do random hands, and all areas of bidding, defense and declarer play are open for comment. grizz: I will try to remember to insert the board numbers in the Chat Log, so you can match up the log with the hands file in the future. grizz: grizz: the E hand may be good enough for a 2!s nuisance bid at this vul grizz: conservative bidders would pass grizz: if S does not bid now, might pass up a nice plus score grizz: so even though the hand is a little light, it's a good suit and a modest !d fit if pard doesn't like !hs grizz: so what does W know about the hand now? grizz: EW do not have a game grizz: but they do have 8!ss between them grizz: E probably does not have much defense grizz: but W does not have a great !s fit either grizz: so Pass stands out - maybe they have already loused up the auction enough that NS will not find their best contract grizz: the preempt has worked grizz: N has a terrrible choice here grizz: the !sKx is protected from the opening lead, but the suit is wide open after that in NT grizz: no !h fit grizz: in a garden variety auction N could have rebid !c, but would anybody feel good about 4!c on this trash? grizz: and the !ds are not rebiddable grizz: so N has a choice of 2 bad bids - 3NT or 4!H terryshry: how about pass? grizz: 3!h is forcing grizz: S is unlimited grizz: so pass is not an option terryshry: ok grizz: unless NS play Negative Free Bids bbo_iac: well you know you have at least 7 of them grizz: so N must decide whether to declare 3NT, or let S play 4!h wyoming33: maybe south should not have bid with only 10 pts and no distribution- and possibly forcing P to the 4 level terryshry: s cold not neg dble right becaus ehe has 5 h right grizz: maybe not - there is nothing illegal about making a Neg X with a 5-bagger grizz: might miss a 5-3 fit that way though grizz: so here is the thought process - terryshry: thats what would have done grizz: if S declares 4!h, they might be in a 7 card fit grizz: and the !sK is vulnerable to an opening lead grizz: safe if W or S has the A, but E is the !s bidder so rates to have it bbo_iac: but one stopper against a preemptive suit seems a bit optimistic? grizz: y, that makes the choice really difficult panim: but n/s are white - go for it grizz: then again, W did not advance the preempt grizz: so probably has 2 or fewer !ss grizz: and also probably has the outside entries grizz: so all things considered, i like 3NT here grizz: if S has 6+, that suit will take tricks in NT too grizz: is there any reason for W not to continue !s? grizz: short answer is NO! grizz: and E has a chance now for a Suit Preference signal, showing the location of any outside entry grizz: lol grizz: pretty optimistic to call the !cQ an entry, but it's the closest thing thereto wyoming33: and north says ah ha - east has a !C honor grizz: now as defenders, E and W should plan both discards now grizz: the !c8 shows a big card grizz: and the small !d denies a !d card grizz: so W knows to hang onto his !ds grizz: the !c5 completes the echo, so E knows that W has the !c card for sure grizz: and N wonders what the small !s meant DougC43: if i'm E i'm afraid throwing the !D will tip declarer off as to the location of the !D honors, so maybe prefer to throw a !S ?? grizz: the !d7 completes the !d echo, denying a !d card grizz: a possible problem, but there are not a lot of entries to dummy grizz: anyway, N must decide now grizz: the !s is out, obviously grizz: ditto the !c Pearls23: this makes also easier on North - to the location of clubs and diamonds grizz: best thing that can happen is for W to win a !d and be endplayed grizz: and now W is skewered grizz: W may sense the endplay coming, but is powerless now to prevent it grizz: ducking will delay it, but nothing prevents it grizz: N cannot risk the hook here, since the !ss will run meshmeshaa: one wld think with the 2s overcall...east has the QJ of D grizz: and E knows now that he is never getting in - the !ss are worthless grizz: the stage is set for the endplay now grizz: and W is stuck grizz: whew! bbo_iac: no doubt :) grizz: as the cards lie, looks like it makes 4!h too - losing a !s and 2!cs grizz: but the NT game is the better bet grizz: any other ideas on this one? Pearls23: so in fact by signaling you might be helping the declarer who is watching the spots discarded grizz: sure grizz: but what else is E to do? grizz: if he pitches !ss, that says he does not have an entry grizz: so N plays it the same Pearls23: yes Pearls23: and North could even play another diamond to west's hand - tho in imps it won't matter - extra trick grizz: besides, as a matter of general principle, the info about entries and such is more valuable to pard than to declarer grizz: and if you give pard bad info in order to throw declarer off, then pard loses his trust in your signals grizz: so if you want to keep pard on board, good signals are a good idea even though declarer can read them too grizz: ready for another? Pearls23: y grizz: bbo_iac: sure grizz: for those of you who don't play it, watch how Puppet Stayman works here - grizz: 3!c asks whether opener has a 5 card major grizz: 3!d is artificial, denying a 5M but showing one or two 4Ms grizz: E holding only 1 4M now bids his short major grizz: and W if he had 4!hs would bid the !h game grizz: without, they play 3NT grizz: so what should N lead here? Pearls23: why not 3!h Pete but 3!s? grizz: that is how Puppet works - to make sure that the strong hand is declarer, the major suits are transfers grizz: if E had both majors, he would bid 4!d and let W choose Pearls23: right grizz: that is the basic scheme grizz: a variant is that 4!c shows 4/4 with GF, and 4!d shows 4/4 with slam interest grizz: but in any case, Puppet works as a transfer grizz: so what should N lead here? grizz: dummy is known to have 4!hs grizz: and W is known to have 4!s wyoming33: knows west doesnt have 4 !Hs but does have 4!S grizz: so the !s lead is off the table wyoming33: cd have 3!Hs though Pearls23: most likely I would lead a club grizz: !hs is not very attractive, but let's look at others kyno40: !h maybe best because we know e can not have many points grizz: the N holding, 3 Qs and a T, suggest Passive Defense grizz: and a passive lead would be a sequence, or a worthless suit grizz: no sequence here, so worthless suit wins grizz: and here we see the logic of Passive Defense grizz: make declarer do all his own work grizz: there is no source of tricks here - no long suit to run grizz: holes everywhere grizz: entry problems in dummy grizz: and defenders are not cooperating!!! grizz: so what to do? bbo_iac: low to J!S? Pearls23: exit with a 2!s grizz: a fundamental precept of NT play is to lose your losers early, while you still have side suits controlled wyoming33: where tricks coming from - hope !D are 3/3 grizz: y, let's do some counting grizz: 1 in the bag so far grizz: 2!s, a possible 3rd if N has the Q grizz: 2!ds, maybe 3 if they break 3-3 grizz: and 2!cs grizz: 8 max, 6 min grizz: so we need at least 1!h grizz: but that is a very dangerous combination to lead from - best to have ops break the suit bbo_iac: want north to lead them if possible grizz: so back to you, defenders grizz: interesting problem for S now wyoming33: play another !C - put west back on lead grizz: N has no more !cs grizz: so if S does not set up the !c, he might not cash it later grizz: it looks tempting to lead a !h or !s grizz: but if pard has any tricks there, they won't go away grizz: and a crafty W puts the rock right back in S's pocket grizz: the low !d signal shows stuff in both majors, just what S wanted to know grizz: if N has a trick in each major, this puppy is going down - but it takes careful planning now grizz: what would you do if you were W? grizz: tough choice! bbo_iac: probably duck :( thinking that N didn't led them because had the A grizz: y, that's what i would think grizz: the 6 is an Attitude lead, showing no interest in a !h continuation if S wins this trick grizz: and by inference asking for a !s grizz: can W afford to duck here? hardly! grizz: now W must bank the contract on bringing home the !d suit meshmeshaa: r these signals only for steady parnerships? grizz: no, these are Standard meshmeshaa: TU grizz: aha! Pearls23: 10 Pearls23: lol grizz: now we have a critical decision by S meshmeshaa: 6 grizz: y, that is easy to see here, looking at all 4 hands meshmeshaa: second hand plays low grizz: and W gives up grizz: interesting hand, many possible lines of play on both O and D grizz: low !s lead gives away the contract, if E plays the J grizz: !h lead gives away 2!h tricks wyoming33: right grizz: !d lead gives away 3!ds grizz: so the strategy analysis by N was right on the money grizz: and the !c lead was the only one that gave defenders the chance to set grizz: and if NS do not play perfect defense, it makes anyway, i think sascha3: :) grizz: !s lead in the middle instead of !h gives away a !s trick grizz: anyway, expect scores on this hand to be all over the board grizz: and crafty defenders rake in a top board grizz: proving once again that the worst defensive mistake you can make is to go Active, when you should remain Passive Pearls23: Q plse - point range for 2NT puppet grizz: 20-21 for most players grizz: 20-22 for some Pearls23: and responder 0+? grizz: so 2!c-2!d-2NT is 22+ wyoming33: and responder has to have 5+ grizz: responder will bid with most 5 point hands Pearls23: right grizz: many of which would pass if pard opened 1 of anything grizz: and most of which will make game grizz: any other questions on this one? sascha3: no ths Pete grizz: oh, the !d play - grizz: W must lead the T late, not the 8 - in order to maybe create an entry to dummy with the 9 grizz: if S jumps up with the !dJ late, then W wins the A and returns the 8, overtakes the 9 and cashes out for the make wyoming33: dummy kind of short of entries - to be able to use the 13th !D grizz: right grizz: OK then, our time is up now, thanks for coming and I'll see you next week. Dianne0516: Thanks for your time Grizz grizz: If anybody needs help retrieving the hand records or chat log, please email me at Grizz@GrizzBridge.com. wyoming33: thank you very much - bbo_iac: thanks Pete and have fun tomorrow :) grizz: I teach private individual, pair, and small group lessons.
