BILmanager: !D!DWELCOME Pete (Grizz) we are glad to have you as a regular :) eire1: jeeze - I just want to learn grizz: thx maureen !H grizz: we'll wait just a couple minutes for stragglers grizz: any questions from last week? BILmanager: !D!DBILAssist - Rosemary will take names for those who would like to play the cards iwhen Grizz is ready for that - we will change players every 2bds BILmanager: !D!D BILAssist (Rosemary) will take the names grizz: we are making a few changes this week grizz: less emphasis on bidding grizz: predealt hands grizz: and a little surprise for later BILAssist->Kibitzers: !D!DVolunteers are needed and appreciated. Please let me know if you can play. Thanks!H!H BILmanager: => Club: !D!DGRIZZ has now began the teaching session on Defense Against NT in the BIL !D!D grizz: Hi everybody, thanks for attending another of a series of lessons on Defense. meseu: not yet - patty is here too grizz: First some preliminaries. grizz: Chat logs and hand records are stored in your computer for later review. For information on how to retrieve them, go the BIL homepage or email me at grizz.den@gmail.com. grizz: Secondly, and completely forgot to mention this last week, I teach private and pair lessons. If you would like to know more please email me at grizz.den@gmail.com. grizz: There will be lots of questions. I want to address them all, but in a manner helpful to all. So please save questions until I ask for them, or after the play of the hand is ... grizz: complete. grizz: On rare occasions there is a burning question supremely relevant to one particular comment, bid or play of the cards, and if so please ask it in open chat. I cannot respond to ... grizz: private chat during a lesson. spirit1320: sorry but how do we volunteer to play? akaj: hi all:) grizz: chat privately with BILassist if you would like to volunteer to play grizz: Are there any other questions so far? grizz: Now for some review. BILmanager: !D to contact BILAssist hold your cursor over the Board # box to bring up the list of Kibs and click on her name to pvte message her grizz: This may sound backwards, but in order to play good defense, you must think like a declarer. What??? SveinR: is there som conv. we shallplay grizz: It is human nature to label, organize and compartmentalize things. While this helps in some ways, it hurts in others. grizz: No, this course is not system-specific SveinR: ok BILmanager->Kibitzers: !D!D all System notes refer to SAYC grizz: It has to do with general defense principles grizz: We will assume SAYC and standard signals grizz: The ability to see the big picture in bridge separates skill levels, and we must overcome the natural tendency to forget about declarer play when we are defending. BILmanager: HI John :) BILmanager: oops sry grizz: We are also creatures of habit, and if we don't cultivate good ones, then bad ones will take root in their place. grizz: Get in the habit of asking yourself questions during the play of the hand. “Why is he doing that?” “How would I play that if I were declaring?” “What does that card mean?” “How ... grizz: would I play that card combination?” “Would he play X if he had Y?” grizz: You will find that the answers are frequently self-evident if you ask the right questions! grizz: So those are threshhold issues: grizz: Think like a declarer. grizz: Ask yourself lots of questions. grizz: You will ask yourself lots of questions as a beginner or intermediate, but you will zero in on the important ones as you learn and progress. grizz: Before we continue, are there any questions? spirit1320: are there any general rules that u follow in opening lead grizz: Let's talk about what declarers do. They need to get rid of losers, and there are 3 basic ways to do that. grizz: great question, and there are hundreds of books worth of answers to it grizz: i'm working backwards here sjpeden: hi grizz: because you need to have a plan for the defense before choosing a suit grizz: and you need to choose a suit before deciding on a card BILmanager->Kibitzers: !D!DThose of you who want to practice what Grizz is teaching you today - sign up for T1140 - Grizz Defence hands prepared by Grizz - as he says "immediate practice and ... BILmanager->Kibitzers: reinforcement makes for ideal long-term learning " You can sign up from here - click on the tourney button on the right of the screen . grizz: so we will work from the general to the specific grizz: Let's talk about what declarers do. They need to get rid of losers, and there are 3 basic ways to do that. grizz: They get ruffed. grizz: They get pitched on long suits. grizz: Or missing honors get finessed. grizz: Of course there are other ways, like loser-on-loser, coups, throwins, endplays and squeezes, but the 3 listed are 99% of the game. grizz: Clues to declarer's probable line of play are available from the auction and play to the first few tricks. For each line of play, there is a defense. grizz: So as a defender, before playing a card or even choosing a suit, you must review the auction, look at your hand and formulate a line of defense. grizz: That's why I was evasive about the lead question - BILAssist: I have your first 4 volunteers when you are ready grizz: It's a great question, but not the first one to ask grizz: Grrrrreat grizz: The opening lead is the first shot fired in a battle, and it must be a carefully considered, deliberately aimed shot. grizz: Defenders have the advantage of firing the first shot, but the disadvantage of firing in the dark. But there are some ways to shed some light on the battlefield. grizz: Did partner bid or make a lead-directing double? Did he not bid when he could have? grizz: Does it sound like ops need ruffs in dummy? Then a trump lead is called for, even if it pickles your partner's trump holding. Possible trump tricks need to be sacrificed to ... grizz: reduce ops trump length. grizz: Does it seem more as if ops are missing some honors and need to finesse? Then go passive, so as not to give anything away. Make declarer do his own work. grizz: Does it look and sound as though ops have good trumps and a long side suit? Then you better hunt for your winners and cash them quickly, before they go away on the side suit. ... grizz: Active defense is called for. grizz: What about NT defense? NT is almost always a race between declarer and defenders to establish their long suit(s) and cash out. NT is about SLOW TRICKS, long suits and ... grizz: establishing our tricks before ops get theirs. grizz: So ordinarily against NT, think about your long suit (it might be in partner's hand!) and entries. That is why a lead from a long suit headed by a minor honor is better than from ... grizz: a short suit headed by A or K – the control serves better as an entry later, than as a trick-taker now, unless it's in your partner's suit. grizz: If you are defending against NT, and have a long suit missing some honors with no outside entries, lead low. Partner rates to have some entries, and will usually have at least a ... grizz: doubleton in the suit vs. NT so can return the suit if appropriate when he gets in. grizz: There are other rules for leading and following, and they are all designed to allow defenders to figure out how the suits are divided, where the strength is, and how to take the ... grizz: maximum number of tricks. grizz: Each card should have a purpose, and defenders should always be looking for ways to communicate with each other. Cooperation and trust are the keys to good defense. grizz: We will be looking at each of these topics in more depth in succeeding weeks, but will keep coming back to basics frequently. Now let's play. BILAssist->Kibitzers: !D!DPlayers for first set of volunteer boards: sthrnldy, Nywoman, JoeTaxi, and spirit1320!H!H Please wait to sit until Grizz asks. You will sit for 2 boards. Thanks!H grizz: We have predealt hands this week, courtesy of my good friend, colleague and regular partner Caitlin, who runs bridge-forum.com and who graciously allowed me to use them. grizz: We will have volunteers play the hands, and I will make comments during the play. You will be amazed at the amount of information that defenders can exchange, and the number of ... grizz: possible ways to communicate it. grizz: In order to save time, I will announce to all volunteers in the clear what bids they should make. Since this is a defense course, let's concentrate on defense and not get ... grizz: sidetracked on bidding. grizz: The hands are already annotated, so at the end of the session you can retrieve the hand records, play them in Bridge Movie and review the topics presented today. grizz: So, are we ready with some volunteers? As we play, please halt play when I say “wait”. There is some point or concept that needs to be explained, or an error to correct, or a ... grizz: question to ask. grizz: One more important point – you may see these hands again in the near future, so please pay attention! grizz: OK, here we go. grizz: Let's have the first group of volunteers BILAssist: !D!DPlayers for first set of volunteer boards: sthrnldy, Nywoman, JoeTaxi, and spirit1320!H!H BILAssist: !D!DPlayers for first set of volunteer boards: sthrnldy, Nywoman, JoeTaxi, and spirit1320!H!H grizz: anybody seen spirit1320? grizz: aha grizz: thx gang, i will send the first hand now grizz: N pass grizz: 1!d BILmanager: !D!D Please bid as instructed by Grizz grizz: 1!s grizz: 1nt BILAssist: !D!DVolunteers are needed and appreciated.
