grizz: Hi everybody, thanks for attending another of a series of lessons on Defense. grizz: Chat logs and hand records are stored in your computer for later review. For information on how to retrieve them, go the BIL homepage or email me. grizz: I teach private individual, pair, and small group lessons. If you would like to know more please email me at Grizz@GrizzBridge.com. grizz: Archives of previous sessions are available at GrizzBridge.com, on the Lessons and Archives page. grizz: There will be lots of questions. I want to address them all, but in a manner helpful to all, so please ask them in open chat. grizz: As always i encourage participation by all kibs grizz: So jump right in with a comment, question, or bid at any time, but please do it in open chat... grizz: ...since I can't always respond to private chat. ydannac: ok grizz: Does anybody need a review on the 5 Lines of Defense? or should we get right to the hands? grizz: I will just hit the high spots grizz: 1. Force declarer to ruff, and lose control of his own trump suit. grizz: 2. Active defense. grizz: 3. Passive defense. grizz: 4. Reduce ruffing power. grizz: 5. Create trump tricks. grizz: Now let's get to the quiz hands. camilleln: std carding? grizz: assume standard carding grizz: W has a decision to make now. what next? Juiceplus: low robzim: low pzee: !hA abrown1: high club spade grizz: and then what? grizz: right abrown1: A h pzee: !s grizz: E heard S's !c bid, so the small one from W must be a singleton Juiceplus: then play the !S grizz: there is one other possible line of defense too, leading to the same result grizz: on this hand it makes no difference grizz: but if W had 3 trumps, it would make a 1-trick difference grizz: again, would require a different dummy layout grizz: but if W has 2 trumps left and dummy has only low ones, Trick 3 will be an underlead, is a !c ruff, grizz: 5 is !SA, 6 is !s ruff and 7 is another !c ruff grizz: here dummy can overruff the !s without losing a natural trump trick grizz: any questions on this one? malestrom2: why doesnt S bid 3 hearts to show more grizz: S has only 12 hcp grizz: and the neg X only guarantees 7+ at the 1-level grizz: or 8+ at the 2-level grizz: and 10+ at 3 grizz: so S does not really have an invitational hand, and 2!h is the best way to show that grizz: while it is true that S has only 6 losers, there are a lot of soft values here in Qs and Js grizz: S has a hand that might accept an invitation, but should be reluctant to make one in this auction grizz: any other questions before we move on? grizz: For this hand, pretend you are East and plan the defense grizz: hint - it's not intuitively obvious HG2: overtake Juiceplus: lol Flaskemand: A!H pzee: !hA pzee: then return !h grizz: here is what goes through E's mind grizz: they get 2!hs and a !s grizz: if S needs the minor finesses, they are onside grizz: so where will the 4th trick come from? pzee: trump promotion grizz: only 1 possibility, in trumps grizz: so first let's get the groundwork done grizz: E must ruff, but which card? grizz: and why? Flaskemand: A grizz: exactly grizz: and now look what just happened - a trump trick has just been created in the W! Juiceplus: but regularly we dont see the hands open... grizz: if S leads trumps off the board, S ducks if E plays high grizz: then his KQ pick up the Jx in W finar: always consider this grizz: yes, and of course it won't always work grizz: but the point is that it might work grizz: and if defense doesn't give it the chance, it can't wyoming33: and seemed only chance to defeat and nothing lost grizz: if W has no trump to promote, it makes no difference grizz: so either you win, or you don't lose with this line of defense grizz: does it get much better than that? onoway: :) grizz: it's a matter of visualization of card combinations that might be in pard's hand grizz: here are the clues on this hand: pzee: as you said, it is counterintuitive :) grizz: 1. the minors are a source of tricks certagen: 2 conditions: p declared a 6-carder so grizz: 2. E has only 2 trumps, so pard might have 3+ robzim: what are the page numbers on the hand when it shows up as "the lesson"? grizz: These concepts are out of the book "How The Experts Win At Bridge" by Burt Hall and Lynn Rose-Hall. robzim: Thank you grizz: It was the 1997 Book Of the Year grizz: and has a lot of good stuff, not just on defense grizz: Back to West now, for the kibs sevenannie: i havent found where to click for lesson grizz: the lesson here will be in the chat, not in the hand record - so don't worry about that grizz: Sitting as West, plan the defense. abrown1: trump clubs for E grizz: here are a couple hints: Flaskemand: !S A grizz: W has trump control with the A abrown1: A c lead grizz: and ops both bid !cs grizz: with W looking at 4!cs pzee: !cA wyoming33: P prob short in !C grizz: very good grizz: right, E prob. only has 1 or 2 abrown1: shd E play 7 first grizz: E will later get the !hK for down 1 grizz: but without the !c lead, this is an easy make grizz: so this hand was a simple piece of detective work grizz: listen to the auction, and visualize what pard's hand looks like grizz: then the hard part, act on the information and formulate the correct plan for the defense grizz: but when you have trump control, always be thinking about how you can best use it wyoming33: better look at CC and see if ops playing HSGT or long suit game try grizz: they are largely the same - grizz: HSGT shows 3+, LSGT is 4+ wyoming33: shd HSGT be alerted grizz: but in this case 3!c was not hsgt, only showing fit in pard's first bid suit abrown1: think so Juiceplus->Club: whats HSGT? wyoming33: help suit asks for help in the suit prob shows losers grizz: y, HSGT should be alerted as may be only 3 grizz: HSGT is Help Suit Game Try grizz: or trial bid, as the Brits say Juiceplus: thx grizz: showing a suit where the bidder has values, and asking whether pard has a good fit there and extras JohnnyHiLo: any requirements for honors in the help suit? grizz: actually the HSGT tells 2 things, and asks a third: grizz: should be at least 1 honor, usually more grizz: AQx, KTx, AJT, etc grizz: an honor holding with "holes" in it grizz: that honors in pard's hand would fill grizz: so the HSGT says: grizz: 1. i have extras, and interest in game certagen: or 3 small losers? grizz: 2. i have a broken honor holding in this suit grizz: 3. do you have extras too pard? and if so, do we have a fit in this suit? grizz: no, 3 small is not a help suit JohnnyHiLo: in this case partner has bid clubs. doesnt have to though? wyoming33: acording to Root and Pavlicek it is bidders weakest side suit - asking for help grizz: this tool is for allowing partner to evaluate his side suit holding, to determine whether they have a double fit certagen: no. I mean you ask for help with more than 2 losers? grizz: that is one definition grizz: another is the lowest ranking side suit in which help is needed grizz: bypassing any suits that are either worthless or solid wyoming33: now I know why I dont play HSGT - seems to be no agreement on its meaning grizz: btw, if pard's answer is "no", i don't have extras, then it doesn't much matter whether there is a fit or not grizz: a word about root and pavlicek - grizz: they are both top notch players, teachers and writers grizz: but their book on conventions does not go into great depth on any of them grizz: so there is a lot of information "between the lines", or not stated at all grizz: i like the book, i own it and refer to it from time to time grizz: always with that caveat about not being comprehensive grizz: any other questions about this one? JohnnyHiLo: is there something definitive? grizz: Hardy is more complete, but not so easy to comprehend JohnnyHiLo: what is the title? grizz: and a lot of the info is in the illustration hands grizz: lol can't recall, but i have the yellow, red and blue versions :) JohnnyHiLo: its not 2/1 game force? grizz: y, that's it abrown1: lots of little books just on ONE convention if really want comprehensive JohnnyHiLo: yes . great book. requires careful reading grizz: y, mike lawrence has a series of pamphlets on single areas grizz: !s8 is an encouraging signal grizz: what now from the East? grizz: hint - E has some nice middle trump cards Flaskemand: !S MargoM: 5D grizz: but doesn't that give S a ruff and sluff? abrown1: lead spade to promote h trumps Flaskemand: night promote the 9 Flaskemand: might grizz: answer - yes, but it's still right grizz: now no matter how S plays, E will score a trump grizz: it required that W had a particular card, the !HT grizz: but if pard does not have that card, nothing else works anyway grizz: so giving up a ruff and sluff can be right, if it does something else good for your side certagen: difficult to foresee...a small H wouldn't do grizz: like promoting a trump grizz: true, but then nothing works anyway Little Kid: is that what is called an uppercut? grizz: yes, this is called an uppercut grizz: and at the table, when you have an opportunity to ruff and several cards to choose from, ask yourself a question grizz: is it possible for pard to have a trump that might be promoted? JanaDe: sounds right to me grizz: if you have a card as big as a 9, it might force an honor grizz: the same question should ring in your head if declarer leads a card off dummy and you have to decide whether to cover grizz: if pard could have Jxx, or Txx, you should cover the first time grizz: since the second might be too late grizz: if pard cannot have a promotable card, then it makes little difference grizz: but if you allow for the possibility, sometimes it will work grizz: any questions on this one? grizz: That concludes today's lesson, and next week we will continue quiz hands on these different lines of defense at the table. grizz: BTW, your satisfaction is guaranteed, or the next lesson is free! :) robzim: is this class an hour or 1 1/2 hours? Whatever, I have to leave in a couple of minutes and will see you tomorrow :) As always, a GREAT class pzee: thanks, pete PedroG: ty Pete ->robzim: done for today :) ydannac: THANKS GRIZZ !H!H:) wyoming33: LOL - thanks :) dmfav: thank you! abrown1: thx rememberpe: thank you ladygolf: LOL, thanks Pete Juiceplus: :):) grizz: If anybody needs help retrieving the hand records or chat log, please email me at Grizz@GrizzBridge.com.
